Porcupine Gorge, near Hughenden, Anzac long weekend.
Trip Leader: Nick Gonano – 6 vehicles.
On way out to Porcupine Gorge we crossed the Flinders River but unfortunately there was no water in the river. We found a new friend at the Prairie Pub, Buffy the buffalo and introduced Bundy to him, we also checked out Prairie Honey.
Lots of fun was had by all and of course we honoured our Anzac’s.
22/4/17 5 cars left the BP at Cluden at 7:40 going to Porcupine gorge. It was an easy drive to our first stop at the Prairie Pub. Left the pub at 12:15 after a drink, pie and talk to the publican. He showed us a short video of his helicopter flight over the gorge. We were able to see where the big waterholes were. We saw Buddy the buffalo, took lots of photos and fed him some bread. Some members bought some local honey from the stall across the road. We turned off the highway, took the road to cross the Flinders River, no water in it this time.
Stopped for firewood before we got into the national park. Howard didn’t manage to get his chain saw started, Lindsay cut a whole tree down to ensure he had enough for the stay. Arrived at the campground around 2. Nick discovered the water cap was missing from the camper. Luckily there was still plenty of water still in the tank. We found our sites, Lindsay and Heathers had someone camping on it so they had to wait for them to vacate. Most sites are fairly small for campers and cars. Ray and Colleen arrived later and set up. It was cloudy, breezy and not too hot.
23/4/17 Next morning we walked to the lookout along the short level track, wonderful view of the ‘pyramid’. Some energetic members did the walk down to the bottom of the gorge. Next day all took the 2.4km return track down to the water, Simon caught a small fish. Some enjoyed the cold water swimming. Errol and Dani did a long walk. Errol had created an ANZAC word search to honour ANZAC day. There were sights of heads down, pens in hands, head scratching, and conferring, (bribing) trying to solve the clues then find the words. Had the mandatory happy hour with a beautiful sunset.
Monday more walking tracks to explore then we drove back to the lookout. While there wasn’t a lot of water to see it is still a magnificent sight.
Tuesday 25/4/17 packed up and on the road at 9:40 beautiful sunny morning no clouds 22degs. We stopped at Charters Towers for lunch and fuel.
